Although the movie Rain Man is not actually based on the popular table game, it contains the best blackjack scene of all time. Tom Cruise plays the self-centered, smooth talking Charlie Babbit. He realises that his autistic brother, Raymond Babbit (played by Dustin Hoffman) possesses a genius ability with numbers and a photographic memory.
Being the schemer that he is, Charlie hatches a plan to cash in on Raymond’s intelegence and they devise a plan to strike it rich at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. They believe they can bring the house down by counting cards.
Raymond blows his first hand after hitting a hard 18 but busting with a queen. Incredibly he tells Charlie that there are lots of queens left. Charlie decides to double down on his 10 against the dealer’s 4. Of course, after Charlie double down, he gets a queen. The dealer then flips over another queen and miraculously busts with a third queen.
Because of Raymond’s strange mannerism, Charlie gives him a massive make-over. After this transition they go on a hot streak, winning more than $80,000.
If you’ve ever been in awe and amazement about card counters, this legendary movie will forever be part of gambling lore. It won four Oscars and altough guys like Raymond should not be hailed as good guys or heroes, it may be admitted that they are pure genius.
